BUILT DIFFERENT
An interview with Maria Peñafiel, IFBB Pro Bodybuilder
What does discipline mean to you beyond the gym?
Beyond the dumbbells, the stage or the scale, discipline is the unbreakable foundation on which my whole life is built. It's the ability to honor my own decisions even when no one is looking, when tiredness weighs heavily and comfort is tempting. It is not about living in a state of absolute rigidity, but about understanding that daily coherence – at work, in rest, in emotional management and in respect for my goals – is the only real tool to turn the vision into reality. Discipline is self-love put into practice.
What part of your path do people not see behind the physique, the stage or social media posts?
The audience usually sees the final product: the lights, the symmetry, the definition on stage and the smile of satisfaction when receiving a medal or a professional card. What you don't see are the years of joint pain, the surgical management of stress, the tears of frustration after a failed workout, and the inevitable loneliness of such an individual process. You don't see the millimetric logistics of each meal weighed to the gram, the hours of sleep sacrificed, or the constant mental effort to maintain the balance between mental health and the extreme demand that high performance demands.
What would you say to a young woman who is starting out in this sport, something that no one told you?
I would tell her that her value is not measured by the hardness of her skin or by the approval of some judges on a given weekend. That you take care of your hormonal health and your relationship with food as if your life depended on it, because it really does. On this path you will try to seek aesthetic perfection, but what is truly revolutionary is to build mental strength, resilience and a physique that is a reflection of your health, not your punishment. Surround yourself with people who understand that you are a human being before an athlete.
What is something you have had to prove in this sport that you think your male teammates have not had to prove?
As a female competitor who has fought every inch to achieve a professional-class physique, I have had to constantly prove that my muscle mass, my density and my aggressiveness in training do not detract one iota from my femininity, nor are they the product of an easy path. Often, female athletes are faced with the double standard of having to justify our competitive ambition: we are required to have an extremely balanced and symmetrical aesthetic, but at the same time our technical authority, our mental toughness and our legitimacy within high-performance bodybuilding are questioned.
Proving that you can have an imposing, professional-grade physique without losing grace or conviction is a battle that my male colleagues simply don't have to fight.
If someone reads your story, what do you hope they take with them?
I hope you understand that success in any area of life is not a stroke of luck or an innate talent, but the result of tireless struggle and flatly refusing to give up when the environment tells you that enough is enough. I want my story to be living proof that with a relentless work ethic, resilience, and the courage to rebuild after every fall, anyone can reach the pinnacle of their own professional and personal version.

CONSTRUIDO DIFERENTE
